If you are getting ready to move into a new home, you might be wondering what type of hot water tank you want to install. There are advantages and disadvantages to both gas and electric powered hot water tanks. I cant say one is better than the other, it just depends on what your situation is. By knowing the difference between the two types of hot water heaters, you will know which one it is that you want to get.

Gas powered hot water heaters use flame to heat the water. When the temperature gauge inside the tank drops below a pre-set temperature, a fire will ignite underneath the water heater, and it will continue to burn until the desired temperature is reached.

Gas powered hot water tanks have a pilot light that must be lit at all times, or else the flame will not ignite when the water cools. If you run out of natural gas or propane, you will not have hot water.

An advantage of your electric hot water tank is that so long as it is working properly, you will have hot water so long as you have electricity. Some electric companies will install them for you, and they dont need to be ventilated. Because they dont need to be ventilated, they are easier to store and install. There is no separate bill for your hot water; it just raises your monthly electric bill a bit.

Emergency Plumbing Repair

A disadvantage to an electric hot water heater is that it will not work in a power outage. It will also raise your electric bill. Another disadvantage is that it takes longer to heat the water than if the water was heated by flame. Sometimes heating elements in hot water tanks can go bad, and have to be replaced.

Over time, both types of hot water tanks can develop leaks. Both types of tanks are equipped with a pressure release valve, which will let out water if it is set too high. If you still find water around the hot water tank, and you have determined that it didnt come from the pressure release valve, then you have a leak.

With propane hot water tanks, if you suspect that you have a leak in the propane line, get out of the house as soon as possible, and call the fire department.

The type of hot water tank you decide to go with is going to be based on what your needs are, as well as what your budget is. Hot water tanks usually need to be replaced every eight to ten years. It is easier and less expensive to replace a tank with the type of tank you already have. However, if you think you need a change, contact a plumber and get estimates on both types of tanks.
