Learn Interior Decorating: The Closet Organizers Checklist
If you’ve ever tried to clean out your closet and get it organized, you know how much of a problem it can be if it’s not done properly. You probably have a hunch that it shouldn’t be hard, but find it frustrating that the closet tends to go back to getting cluttered and disorganized before you know what’s happened, as if the closet had a mind of its own. There are a lot of tips and tools out there available for straightening things out – sometimes, a bit too much information actually. Let’s take a look at what you want to do by going through a checklist of closet organizer methods and strategies.
1. Get rid of what you don’t actually wear.
This first step is essential for organizing a closet when it’s in bad shape. Go through all your items and discard anything not worn in a year. (Of course save certain outfits that only are worn on special occasions, such as outfits for weddings or job interviews.) Feel free to donate all those items to a charity or if that’s too much give up, have a yard sale or sell your expensive clothes on line.
2. Buy nice hangers for what’s left.
This isn’t one of the most important steps but it’s important we establish our intention to make a good closet. Starting with quality hangers is a good way to do that if you can afford the money. There’s also the added bonus that beyond looking nice, the do indeed do a better job of hanging up your clothes.
3. Consider installing a doubling clothes rod.
The doubling rod is a device which gives you a second closet rod. By hanging from the existing rod in the closet, this rod goes below it, giving you a second level of space to hang your clothes. They don’t cost much and they really give you leverage and make the best use of wasted space in your closet.
4. Get an over the door shoe rack.
Shoe racks do exactly what you might imagine: they give you a space specifically for your shoes. Not the most revolutionary of ideas, but it’s shocking how many people never consider the idea that all pairs of shoes should have a place they return to after being a worn. A shoe rack provides just that, and it keeps them off the floor, too!
5. Group similar items together.
Grouping like items together will naturally make it easier to find things and on the other side of the equation, will make it easier to place items back into your closet. To group like items together, just imagine logically what category they’d go in. For instance, put summer shirts together, then summer dresses, then maybe start something different such as all your jeans, then your shorts, and so on.
If you’ve read these tips, you now know that closet organization isn’t hard. It just takes the implementation of a few good strategies and the rest is easy! If you’ve taken the steps above, your closet should be totally transformed now.
