Most of those that suffer from acid reflux realize that this is stomach acid backing up into the esophagus. Those same people know that this is a very miserable situation to have to deal with on a regular basis.

The more common symptoms of suffering from acid reflux are that burning sensation or just a general painful feeling in the middle of your chest around the area of the heart. For those experiencing acid reflux for the first few times it is not unusual to panic just a little bit into thinking that it is a heart attack. Since there is that similarity it is important for sufferers to have this confirmed by their family physician.

A common thread among sufferers of this affliction is that the pain and misery frequently occurs after a heavy meal as opposed to a light meal. One of the first steps that people need to take in order to bring acid reflux under control is to start eating smaller and lighter meals that are more easily digested.

Your acid reflux discomfort or pain actually is a fairly common problem and manifests itself in a wide variety of ways. In fact, many patients suffering from dysphonia, or hoarseness, are actually suffering from the long term effects of acid reflux.

Acid reflux, naturally enough, is also frequently referred to as heartburn which is that feeling characterized by the tightening of the chest and even sometimes difficulty in breathing. Actually heartburn is the most common acid reflux symptom and that burning sometimes causes people to eat antacids on a regular basis. For the short term, eating antacids is an acceptable response in seeking relief from pain and discomfort but it is never a long-term answer.

Many cases of acid reflux are resolved simply by correcting poor eating habits. Poor eating habits include not only eating the wrong combination of foods but also the wrong quantity of food and stuffing that excess food into the stomach much too quickly. Fast eaters are frequently sufferers of acid reflux pain and discomfort.

It is important to realize that the expression “acid reflux disease” is an unfortunate misnomer. Strictly speaking this is not a disease. Rather it is a case of the digestive system not functioning properly. The good news here is that quite frequently a few simple life style changes will make a huge difference in one’s quality of life whereas with any disease you will usually need medical intervention.

One most important tip to bear in mind though is that although this acid reflux is not a disease it does have to be taken seriously by those experiencing it since the burning sensation experienced by many is a literal burning of tissue caused by the stomach acid. Therefore obtaining relief from acid reflux remains a serious and urgent condition.
