Great Tools Set for the Price, Needs Better Packaging, December 20, 2008
    By
Misti H (Yorba Linda, CA United States) –

This review is from: Makita LXT702 18-Volt LXT Lithium-Ion Cordless 7-Piece Combo Kit (Tools & Home Improvement)

I received this product via free shipping, and like the other reviewers, mine was poorly packaged. No box in a box, just the mfr box. Corners were dented, box was torn up, looked like it had been dropped on one end a few times. Inside, I found all the tools, but some of the items had shifted and were scuffed up a bit. Some items were floating around, like the screwdriver bit, and the sawsall bit.

However, all the tools functioned properly, and I got this set for a good price. These are top quality tools. Even the radio sounds decent, with a aux input for a MP3 player. Would have been nicer if the radio played CD’s, but it doesn’t.

For the price, this is a great deal, so just refuse the package if it arrives beat up so you can avoid the return shipping charges and get another one.

A little unrelated, but when I first found this item it was priced at $494, but when I checked out about two hours later, the unadvertised “sale” on this item ended, and the price went up to $549. Called Amazon directly, and they wouldn’t budge. A little cheesy in my opinion, but still a good deal at the new price.

Would be a five star with sturdier packaging.

Absolutely love the tools!! The shipping problems also appear to be fixed, mine was shipped placed inside of a stronger exterior box with everything intact. I would also agree with previous reviews that I’m not too keen on the duffel bag, it has pockets for two drills, the recip saw, and the charger, most everything else just lays loose in the bag. I did find that if I packed the radio in the bag as well things fit snugly and didn’t get banged around too much. A solid case would have been nice but on the other hand most likely would have been extremely large. Quick review of tools –

    Drill – better than awesome
Driver – Even better than the drill, already survived a drop off the ladder unscathed
Recip saw – Very strong, yet soft to operate
Angle Grinder – Like it but rpm seems slow, doesn’t back down though and it has a cool overload indicator
    light
Circular saw – Great for a battery powered saw
Flashlight – Bright, but would have liked to see LED and also a flexible goose neck design
Charger – maybe time to update to a more modern looking design but works well
Radio – Compact design is very nice, much smaller than other job site radios and it isn’t an odd shape so it packs well. Looks very sturdy. Would be cooler if it could charge a battery.

Very Happy With These Tools, December 17, 2011

I’m a general contractor that has done a lot of commercial electrical work as well. I’ve been using Bosch 18v cordless tools for awhile now and they worked ok. Big and clunky, but lots of power much like the Dewalt stuff. After doing a bunch of work at a Makita testing plant and getting to know some of Makita’s engineers I was very impressed and decided to try out Makita tools after my Bosch stuff started to get old. I’ve been very stoked on this tool set! All the tools are much lighter in weight, but feel more solid.(Might have something to due with most of my Bosch stuff being made in Mexico) The power seems to be a little down compared to my Bosch, but not much. The light weight and compactness of these tools more than makes up for their slight lack of power. I purchased two of the smaller batteries and use them with the drill and impact gun. (other than the light these are the only tools the smaller batteries fit in this set, although the bigger batteries work with all the tools.)I’m constantly amazed at the tight spaces I can get these tools into!

Radio: It plays music, albeit a bit bass heavy. My only real complaint is that it doesn’t act as a battery charger.

Recip saw: Awesome. No complaints whatsoever. I had to demo out a section of roofing that had 6-7 old comp shingle roofs and 1x decking. The saw powered through it with no trouble.

Circ saw: Love it. I cut 2x lumber all day with it. Overhead work and tight spots are very easy with this light weight saw. Only complaint is that it has a saw dust ejection port that spits all the dust in your face in certain akward positions. A peice of tape fixes this problem. It’s got plenty of power for full depth cuts on 4x, etc… but you will go through batteries quickly doing this. If I had to cut a lot of 4x I’d get out my corded Mag77.

Impact Gun: This is my favorite tool in the set. Small, light, plenty of power. What more can you ask for?

    Drill: Another winner.

Angle Grinder: While I don’t use it a lot I really dig having it. It has more power than I was expecting and I have no complaints.

Flash Light: It provides light. What a concept. Yeah… it works.

Charger: The quick charge times make a big difference. Although I still want more batteries. Right now I have two of the big ones and two smaller ones. I could use at least one more big guy on some days.

Bag: It has enough room for all the tools, plus an extra charger and some misc stuff. I use the wheels a lot on big job sites or if I have to park far away.

Overall: This is the perfect kit for me and I couldn’t be happier. So much better than my Bosch or my buddies Dewalt, in fact he’s gonna buy this set soon as his are getting long in the tooth. This price at Amazon was by far the best I found. I do wish the packaging was better tough. While I’m pretty sure all the contents of the set made it to my door the seem was open when it arrived at my door.

Porter Cable Tools are Great —, June 8, 2011
    By
    Augie (United States) –

This review is from: Porter-Cable PCL418C-2 18-Volt Lithium-Ion Cordless 4-Piece Combo Kit (Tools & Home Improvement)

My brother turned me on to these 18Volt Porter Cable power tools. They got a buy recommendation in CR magazine. You can spend a lot more money, but if you’re working on projects around the house and don’t need “contractor” level tools, then this is clearly the set for you. Actually, it may even be the set to buy if you are a contractor. You could buy two of these for one of other brands.

I’ve used the drill, of course, and it works fine with adjustments for torque, keyless chuck, etc. It has the light which is helpful when you need it and illuminates your work area. Basic tool that will do all you need it to.

The impact driver (which I purchased separately) is fantastic for putting in screws. I wasn’t familiar with the impact driver tool until I tried this. Don’t use your drill for this job. The impact driver works very, very well to put screws in. It has the higher torque and will drive the screw with one motion all the way to completely in. This tool is great. Save yourself some time and energy and get this impact driver.

I’ve got the circular saw and it works fine as well. A basic tool to rip plywood or cut boards, and this one goes a long time on the EX battery. Only thing I had to pick up separately was a saw guide that slides into the saw and tightens with the set screw. This lets you use the edge to keep your line straight on the board you’re sawing. Picked up a nice guide that fits any saw at Home Depot for about $10. I’ve used this saw to cut 4 by 4 posts for outside fence, for plywood, for 2 by 4’s, trim, etc. and it’s perfect.

The reciprocating, sawzall makes you feel like you’ve got a real weapon in your hands. This is great for cutting through old work that you need to remove and works quite well. It’s a powerful tool that lets you demo easily. It is so easy to change blades you won’t believe it.

The jigsaw (also purchased separately from the kit) works very well too. It’s a breeze to change blades and the blade locks in place against a support that lets you confidently make very smooth cuts. This is not the jigsaw of the past which was often a pain to use with poor results. No, this Porter Cable jigsaw is very smooth and makes the cuts you need.

I’ve been using these tools for a month or so to do some demo and remodeling and I highly recommend them. You cannot beat them at the price. Battery life is excellent and recharge time is about 15 mins for LX and 30 mins for EX battery. So with two batteries you can keep on working without a problem. By the time you use one out, your other battery is recharged. And they do go for quite a bit of work on a single charge. I installed some plywood flooring on my porch with lots of screws and my impact driver never did quit. The tools are solid, handle well, and are of very good quality. Porter Cable gets the highest rating.

It’s not especially sexy, but it gets the job done. Arrived quickly, one of the two supplied batteries would not hold a charge so I called customer service and they immediately shipped me a new one free of charge.
I’d never used a battery powered circular saw, and this one works great. I especially appreciate the instant-stop feature, meaning the blade does not continue to spin when you let go of the trigger. Sufficient power from both saws and drill… and fantastic price!

This is a great set of tools. I went back and forth for a long time on whether to shell out the money for a name brand I knew like Dewalt, and if I used them everyday I probably would have. But I went with PC because the tools looked well built and they got really good reviews. I was not disappointed. I like them so much that I purposely come up with new projects just so I can try them out. The Lithium-Ion batteries last quite awhile, I heard horror stories of the Ni-Cad. The tools feel sturdy and solid in your hands and cuts are pretty clean and just and good as I’ve gotten from corded saws. This set comes with a large battery and a smaller one. The best thing is that adding on more tools are fairly cheap since you don’t have to buy a new battery with each one. I picked up a vacuum for $22 and a jigsaw for $30.
