Question by ron-D: Is there a good cherry stain for kitchen cabinets?
I just signed a contract for a new home, but I thought upgrading the cabinets was way too overpriced with the builder. In lew of replacing the cabinets I did choose, which is the lightest standard cabinet offered, is there a good stain I can use to stain them darker?

Minwax makes good stain, however you will have to strip the finish off of them as they will have either a varnish or shellac on them and you will have to strip them down to the bare wood and start all over if they are real wood cabinets…you will have alot of time invested in doing them right…not to mention the mess…but it can be done.

I love your point as to the Wife not being at home when you used the Kitchen sink to clean the unit. Sadly I think my wife would gut me crotch to eyeball with a dull deer antler if I even Thought of doing the same.

After using this mixer a fews times I can’t see how it won;t work with just about any type of finish. I think the secret is the auger that flows everything int he can so well. If it’s in the can, it gets mixed!

I’ll have someone check on you in a day or two, after your wife sees what happened in the sink.

She’s right – to do it properly, you will have to sand off the current stain. Here are some detailed instructions –

Also, General Finishes makes a beautiful cherry stain – See it here – http://www.generalfinishes.com/finishes/water-base-finishes/waterbase_finishes.htm (Scroll down to the GF Water Based Wood Stains – Antique Cherry, Black Cherry, Rosewood), then use their store locator to find where to purchase in your area. Or Rockler.com carries it, too, I think.
