Question by Vigor: What accessories do I need for a car amplifier and subs?
I am going to buy a car and subs, but dont know what wires, tools, etc I need.
Answer by The Old SoundMan
The amplifier you need depends on what other speakers you intend to use with the subwoofer, what sort of sound pressure levels you are likely to be running at etc. You could use a four channel amplifier and drive your left and right splits off channels 1&2 then use channel 3&4 in bridged mono to drive your sub.
As the Dual sub is rated at 4 ohms that may work out well as long as the amplifier will drive 4 ohms in bridged mono mode. (Most should)
Crutchfield also lists this amplifier which should do the job.
Car amplifier power ratings can generally be taken with a grain of salt.
The RMS power rating is the most important along with the recommended load impedance. If you drive a 4 ohm speaker with an amplifier rated for maximum power at 2 ohms you will only get half the power delivered to the speakers.
If the speaker impedance is lower than the amplifier rating you can damage the amplifier and the speakers if you drive it hard!
You will need 4 or 6 guage power cable to power the amplifier, a 60A inline fuse, speaker cable to run from the amp to the sub and to the L&R splits, diagonal wire cutters, screwdrivers, stanley knife, insulation tape, straightened coathanger wire for pulling speaker and power leads through firewall and under carpets etc, 12v test lamp, multimeter.
