Question by Barefoot: How would I get started With WOODWORKING?
I want to learn about woodworking, etc. I want to build things, from little boxes to a kitchen table, or even a house! But, of course I want to start small. Is there a book, instructional dvd that is best? OR should I just be an apprentice somewhere (Which I dont have time for) Any equipment you recommend? I’d really appreciate your answers!

good base, poor table, July 28, 2005

I purchased this base for my large bench top drill press. The package and all of its contents arrived in good condition. My first disappointment was the butcher block table top which is nothing more than MDF with wood grain paper to give a woodlike appearance. I assembled the base according to directions, leaving most of it loose until the top is attached. I pre-drilled the top to the depth specified in the directions. After attaching the table top I tightened the base and found the entire unit to be very sturdy with a solid feel and easy to level. When I returned to my shop an hour later to start moving the drill press, I noticed the top had developed severe cracks running parallel to the top and bottom at three of the four corners, some of the cracks 6″ long. Rather than have Shop Fox replace the top with another that may have the same problem I decided to use 1″ Baltic Birch plywood for the top. The table base is great, but the top has serious problems and is very disappointing.

Fox D2056 Tool Table for grinder- The top is not a laminated wood product or even a glued wood product. It is more like compressed sawdust or cardboard material. The first work table top split horizontally before ever being used. The second top from Grizzelie has gouges and scratches and peeled covering as well as being absolutely filthy with dirt on all surfaces. Unless you already have a wood work surface for this table, don’t waste your money.

This unit does a pretty good job and, considering its affordability, I think it’s a good value. I like it because it’s easy to move around the house for projects that generate some dust. When I am sanding and I have it near by, I can see the dust heading straight into the unit and coming out clear on the other side. So, in my book, it does its job. It doesn’t catch all of the dust of course but it’s much better than not having an air filter at all.

I’m also a woodworker, however, and I don’t think I would ever consider using this as THE air filtration tool for my shop. I think they made a mistake by calling this a Shop Air Cleaner; if you have a woodshop and therefore generate a lot of dust, you may want to look at stepping up to a tool better suited for permanent installation on the ceiling.

For me, this tool is portable so that I can use it outside of my shop. So, if you would like something portable and affordable that keeps your lungs and house a little cleaner, I think it’s worth the money.

Have this air cleaner in a small basement shop ( ~250 sq. ft) at my summer home where I have a table saw and many portable power tools. Air cleaner works well for that area keeping the dust down. Its very light and portable, so can move it and set on a table near your work. Would have given 5 stars if it had a mechanism to hang from the ceiling. I screwed some hooks to the joists and used some old chain and placed through the handles and that works fine. Glad I purchased this becasue there is noticably less dust in my shop.

Well, here in Tucson, there’s a place called “the Woodworker’s Source” and they have all the books, tools, hardware, machines and of course WOOD. From all over the world. The more exotic woods are rather pricey, but perfect for what you want. I imagine there’s something like that where you live and it would be worth it to call them and drop in and look around at all that great wood.

Ive been at it for 40 years and still dont have all the tools I want. Even looking in my shop at over $ 450000 in tools and equipment. Your best bet is to find someone in your area like me and ask for help learning. Most wood workers or crafstsmen are more than happy to share the knowlege and experiance for a little company,

There are quite a few sites on the net that have plans for woodworking – from basic to advanced. What I would do id talk to your local hardware and find out exactly what you need first. Explain to them what you want to do and let them recommend the basic tools you need. There is also the DIY Network on cable, which has hints etc on the net on
    http//www.diynetwork.com/
That will give you an idea for what you will need for each project.
