Question by ricken325c: How do I distinguish between “black cab” or city licensed cab and minicab in England?
I heard some horrifying stories about minicab. I want to make sure I get the “black cab” in London or officially licensed cab in Liverpool. How do I tell if its the officially licensed cab? Any website with photos of both?

Best answer:

Answer by carina
an official licensed cab will have a sign on top which can be lit up … see these photos

mostly these photos are of London cabs but I think the Liverpool ones are very similar … anywhere in the country a licensed cab will have a sign on top, maybe a different shape or colour … whereas a minicab will not

Black cabs are called hackney cabs. It’s a certain type of car http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/b5/Hackney_carriage.jpg They normally have the word ‘taxi’ above the driver’s head. When the cab is available, the word is lit up in yellow. If it’s not lit up, it means you can’t use it. Like this http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3011/2563756563_a3ca6aca0a.jpg?v=0

Private taxis are normal cars. They have a licence plate on the back, just under the registration plate. This plate will tell you the car’s registration number, model and colour and the time frame the taxi is licensed (normally a year). http://www.personal-safety-training.com/Images/PST%20Location%20Photos/Minicab.jpg

It is isn’t a Hackney cab (with the sign lit) or it doesn’t have a taxi licence plate, do not get into it.

As another note, black cabs can be hailed in the street, whereas you should only ever use a minicab if you’ve booked it. If you haven’t booked it, it’s not insured. My friend got mugged twice by getting into unbooked minicabs. You’d think he would have learnt after the first time, but no.
