Does what it ought, but item not (completely) as described, June 21, 2011

I ordered this unit last week to replace a 12-year-old 6-gallon Shop-Vac with detachable blower. This unit was priced about what I expected to pay, and the product title indicated it also had a detachable blower. (If the product title no longer says so, then they have–rightly– corrected it.)

This product DOES NOT have a detachable blower. It has a blower **port** to which you hook up the hose, but you cannot remove the motor from the tank and walk around with it like a leaf blower. Shop-Vac makes, and Amazon sells, a 12-gallon unit with a detachable blower, for about $40 more– it’s Shop-Vac model 9633400. The price differential is about the same as I would have to pay for a standalone low-end leaf blower, so although I’m frustrated that the product title was inaccurate, I do not intend to return the product.

Overall, after assembly and minimal testing, I am pleased with this vacuum. It was easy to assemble the casters. The manual could stand to use larger type and more pictures of what pieces are expected to be in the box. The manual is overly generic, apparently used for multiple models, and half of the assembly instructions apply to items “not standard with all models.”

The motor is definitely quieter than my previous shop vacuum. The main hose screws onto the tank, so it is harder to pull the hose out while using it at full extension. (The obvious tradeoff is tipping; see another review.) The tank inlet will accept my existing Shop-Vac hoses (2.25 O.D.), so now I have extra hoses. The 1.25″ wands and accessories appear interchangeable with my existing 1.25″ Shop-Vac accessories.

The wand extensions with this unit seem a little stingy with their intake diameters. When vacuuming up some chips and sawdust using the new wand extensions, I got several clogs– easy enough to clear, and a common occurrence anyway with shop vacuums. However, when I switched to my old wand extensions, the clogs were much less frequent for the rest of the small test job.

The accessories for this unit do not include a brush– an item I find very useful in my shop, so I will definitely be keep that from my current kit. This unit includes an accessory tool holder that can be attached to the unit, but if loaded with accessories, it looks like it will interfere with the cord-winding hooks (to which the tool holder itself attaches).

All in all, it looks like this will be a functional unit of reasonable quality for the price. Just don’t expect it to have a detachable blower.

I thought this had a detachable blower it does not. I need it so I used it therefore I had to keep it rather than return it…it does not have enough power.
