The motor and tool itself are very heavy duty. The tool has significant weight to it. You can feel the heft in your hand. I believe this to be well built and will probably last for a very long time. Where B&D shaved costs off to make the tool more entry level priced must have been in the shoe. It is very simply designed and lacks a lot of precision machining and design. I know a well design shoe allows for more precise work. However a jigsaw by nature is typically a semi-rough cutting tool anyway that will need sanding afterwards. So with that in mind it is adequate probably for 90% of most peoples tasks. This jigsaw also comes with one wood cutting blade. The safety switch works well enough and the wide open throat and kerf design allows wood chips and dust to be blown or vacuumed away without encumbrance. The motor ventilates toward the blade so that it blows dust away from the the cut line. It works well. Just make sure you use it outdoors or wear a dust mask! You can also see the cut line well with there not being anything in the way such as a dust shroud or other front end cover. This is a straight forward up and down cutting action. There aren’t any reciprocating or cut angle options. The sole plate is adjustable via an underneath allen screw so that you can cut up to 45 degree bevel.
There seems to be some confusion by some of the reviewers as to why this jigsaw doesn’t come with a battery and charger. Most manufacturers offer bare tool versions so that you do not have to purchase another charger and battery every time you want to add to your tool set. Thus we have bare tools being sold for that reason. You should only buy bare tools if you already have a charger and at least a couple of batteries. I keep 1 chargers and 4 batteries on my truck for work. I also have a charger in the shop and a couple of batteries there too.
If you are vested in the very good quality Black and Decker line of 20V cordless tools, then I would definitely say this jigsaw would make a great addition. There are just some things that only a jigsaw like this will do well. It is heavy duty, powerful and features the classic D-handle design. Besides Black and Decker owns DeWalt and I know they stand behind their products, and that is not always the case nowadays.
That being said, it works great. I have a similar Porter Cable jigsaw and I would say this one is almost the same but not quite as nice (thus knocking off a star.) The blade is REALLY easy to put in, you lift the lever, stick it in and push the lever back down. No more screws and nonsense. The fact that it is battery powered is a HUGE deal. It just makes it so much easier to deal with the tools. And it’s pretty good too; it compares with my 10 year old electric jigsaw as far as quality of cutting. So the battery powered of today are really competitive to the electric, which is SOOOO nice!
A little heavier than my Porter one; this one works well enough and gets the job done. Seems sturdy enough. Should last a good while!
