DO YOUR RESEARCH AND GOOGLE THE “RYOBI LITHIUM ION BATTERY PROBLEM”, May 24, 2015

I have about a dozen Ryobi cordless tools of different sorts. While they are home-duty tools, the tools have generally performed well. I have been on the Ryobi platform for about 10 years. The old batteries were a little heavy but they worked well for years. Ryobi recently (in the last couple of years) introduced the Lithium-Ion batteries (a couple different flavors). At first, it looked like an upgrade and all of them worked initially out of the box. HOWEVER, BEWARE–the Lithium-Ion batteries from Ryobi have a serious defect. They just stop working after about 1-2 years. I have 10 of them from various tools i have purchased, all less than 2 years old. One by one, nine of them have stopped working so far. Down to one working battery for all of my tools. DO YOUR RESEARCH AND GOOGLE THE “RYOBI LITHIUM ION BATTERY PROBLEM”. There is a lot of PR from Ryobi and retailers so you have get past the first page, but then it will become clear this is a wide spread problem and some fixes (all of which require you to disassemble the battery). There a numerous blogs where people have tried to make warranty claims or sought help from Ryobi with no success. Ryobi has told some that they are “disposable” items and simply denied there is a problem with others. To be fair, I didn’t save any of the receipts because they initially worked and have not yet contacted Ryobi, but it sounds fruitless.

I am willing to forgive having a product glitch, however, this one is pervasive and the manufacturer seems to be unwilling to address it. For that, they deserve one star. Based on my experience of 90 percent failure rate (plus the multiple blogs indicating this is a systemic issue), i can’t believe that others will have better luck.

Ryobi has really stepped it up over the past few years. I’m an electrician and use my impact daily and drill occasionly. It has already with stood and 10-12 foot drop onto a concert floor. I use to be a hardcore Dewalt fan until their quality dropped significantly after Black and Decker purchased the Dewalt company. These days I highly recommend Ryobi One+ tools to all my co-workers and friends. They have have great power/torque and seem to really withstand constant use. However I have had 1 outta my four battery’s die to where it won’t hold a charge after a couple months so I’m taking a star for that.

Well worth the price for what is advertised; but you get what you pay for. The tools work perfectly well for around the house stuff though they “feel” a little cheap due to the materials. The battery charges quickly and keeps the charge long enough to do the job. The charger is “smart” so it wont ruin the battery if you leave it in too long. As I said, worth the price but if you are doing more than working around the house or fixing a deck you may want to invest a bit more and get contractor-level tools.
