Check out: Turning Projects

Turning Projects

In this tape, you'll learn to select the wood species best suited for a wide variety of turning projects. Raffan shows you how to manipulate skews, gouges and parting tools to produce the whole repertoire of wood-turning cuts, and how to recognize the structural aspects of a project as it develops on the lathe. Raffan also shows you how to sand and apply finishes and waxes, and he offers important safety tips throughout the tape.

Richard Raffin again shows us how it’s done. What more can I say? His skill as a wood turner and his ability to convey that knowledge is marvelous to behold. While he may have a piece of wood crack or split while turning, he adeptly demonstrates that a potential porblem can be overcome. He turns problems that occur into opportunities for us, his students, to listen and learn how to fix them. He clearly shows the viewer that many problems or mistakes may be overcome. He shares a number of turning projects that are both basic and more advanced. This was an excellant and informative DVD that is well worth the money. I hope you enjoy it. God bless! Turn safely! Slan leat, le gra` Dr. John Touchton.

Needs more instruction to describe tool position and angles. Not very expensive but could be better for the novice.

If you have a smaller, home shop I would say forget this machine:
    – It is a HUGE – too big for most shops. Assembled it stands about 3-1/2 feet deep by 6 feet wide on the floor, and about 80″ high.
    – It is extremely noisy. I haven’t measured in decibels, but always wear hearing protection when operating it. This is especially necessary if you are in the same room.
    – It required a 30-amp 240-volt circuit — much larger than most home shops can handle
    – It generates a lot of heat.

On the other hand, for a medium sized shop it might be perfect.
    – It easily handles multiple machines, like a sander, table saw, and radial arm, at the same time.
    – It is the only collector I’ve seen that goes a good job with a large planer, especially in a 1 machine only mode.
    – Wireless remote control switch is extremely handy.
    – The internal “crank” style handle for cleaning the dust filters is very effective

Some things to consider when you install:
    – Make note of the noise and size mentioned above
    – I upgraded my collection system from 4″ to multiple 6″ pipes; this machine can easily handle the volume and you don’t want to restrict it.
    – I placed my collector in a back room, but mounted the control unit in the main room (as suggested by Shop Fox) so I could make use of line-of-sight wireless remote control.
    – The main sawdust collection barrel accommodates 40-gallon leaf bags. So you don’t have to buy special bags from SF.
    – 40 gallons of sawdust is quite heavy and difficult to lift our of the barrel (but not impossible).
    – The dust barrel itself is on wheels, so can easily be rolled out from under the machine.
    – This seems to be a very well-built machine.

Do not shop for this Shop Fox product, December 4, 2013

After the cabinet shop with whom I am employed purchased the W1816 Shop Fox 3HP Cyclone Dust Collector in April of 2011 the motor has failed twice warranting a recall for product defect. Motor failure creates shop downtime. We have to wait days for a new motor to arrive. It is extremely hard to pull the bag out of the canister when full. You must shovel the dust into another trash container which exposes you to harmful dust particles & wastes time. As noted in another review it is extremely loud. You need to build a sound proof closet around it to damper the noise. The magnetic remote only works when you are standing right in front of the machine, which makes it worthless. The filter bags are crammed around the cyclone canister making it easy to rip a bag open on the canister lid’s latches. It makes you wonder who tests these products, the bean counters or inexperienced woodworkers? I do not recommend purchasing this product. You would only be disappointed.
