Lighting for Your Houseplant

It is comparatively simple to increase lighting in our homes without making any changes to the humidity of our homes so as to affect our physical comfort.
The doors and walls keep out the weather and keep in the warmth. The windows admit light and when required, air. The furnishings add to comfort and coziness.
Only when we begin to analyze, feature by feature, we discover the separate qualities of the separate parts that go to make up the whole. If you take the simple example of doors, you’ll find that they can differ widely. An exterior door can face any aspect and be subjected to several different kinds of weather.
On some fruit farms in Great Britain, on the other hand, the sawdust is composted with sewage sludge, allowing 1 ton of sawdust to 1 ton of sludge. The problem here is that compost heaps must be turned three times at six-weeks’ intervals if the best results are to be achieved. During the eighteen-weeks’ period the heat will rise to 140 F, and the final result is a beautiful black, crumbly, odourless substance, full of those small worms known as Brandlings which are one of the signs of first-class organic manure. Such compost, of course, does not de-nitrify and is first class as a mulch, particularly for soft fruits.
Light is normally more important than temperature to most house plants. So long as extremes of heat or cold are not experienced nearly by all the normal range of plants which we grow in our homes, the plants will be perfectly happily in the normal range of temperatures just as we enjoy ourselves.
The furnishings can absorb or reflect light, provide or disperse warmth, harbor or scatter dirt and dust. Heating can be local or general, yet either will to some extent result in some locations being warmer or cooler than others, either in the immediate vicinity as with radiator or fire, or more generally as for example the bedrooms being cooler than the living rooms. Again, relative humidity will vary according to the warmth of a room, the frequency of its use, the type of use it receives, the frequency of window opening and other factors.
