  4. The capacity of the Motor. It is essential to go for the optimum size of the motor so as to avoid an overkill leading to waste or an inefficient machine.

  • Check that the blades have edges of good quality carbide.
  • Ensure that the blades rotate at adequate speed to attain a clean slice.
  • It is better if the cutter-head and feeder system are linked.
  • Check for the maximum thickness of wood that thee planer will accept and also the minimum thickness that can be achieved.

Handy Tricks for Efficient Use of Planer. The following are a few handy tricks to get best results from a planer:-

  1. By cutting with the grain, you can avoid tear out.
  2. You can save time and avoid snipe at the end of the boards by feeding a group of spindles together.
  3. Old wood can be reclaimed by using the Flattening feature of the Planer.
  4. Small ridges should be ideally removed using sandpaper.

Conclusion. A carefully chosen and well-operated wood planer is a great asset to a wood worker’s set of tools. It has to be given due consideration and ample thought before buying any planer.
