Should You Replace or Repair Your Roof?

Dealing with roof repair and replacement is not always an easy decision. Replacing a roof is one of the biggest expenses any homeowner can make. Some may want to extend the life of their roof a few years by patching it, and in some cases, it can be done. But there are others where it would be a waste of time and money, not to mention that it could put you and your family, and your property, in danger. Let’s take a look at a few things you should be looking for when deciding between repairing and replacing your roof.

When a Repair is an Option

There are certain situations where you can repair the roof. It all depends on the nature of the damage. Things like leaks, for instance, can be repaired in many cases, even if they seem major. The problem is when water starts getting into the building’s structure. This will make repairs tougher and more expensive.

Shingle issues can also be repaired. If you have a few missing shingles, these can be replaced by a professional. One issue, however, is that you may not be able to find the same color as the previous ones, and you may start to get a patchwork look if you have to replace many of them.

What about Curling Roof Shingles?

These can be tricky. In some cases, these are confined to only one area of the roof. In this case, it could be possible to have them repaired. But, if the issue is widespread, then it’s usually a sign of something worse, and you might have to have the roof replaced. Curled shingles are not only an aesthetic issue; they can affect the roof and house structure’s integrity.

Curled shingles do not offer protection against the elements anymore. A contractor will be able to come in and inspect the roof and see what should be done. They may also spot other signs and tell you when to replace your roof.

When Replacing is the Only Choice

However, know that in most cases of deep structural damage, you’ll have no choice but to replace the roof. Often, major issues are caused by water and humidity. In others, it can be because of sun exposure or damage caused by wind, hail, or snow.

Roof decay and age are two cases when replacement is usually the only option. If you notice irregularities on the roof like dips, cracked shingles, or wavy patterns, then it could be a sign that the structure underneath is affected.

In this case, you will have no choice but to replace. All roofs have an expiry date as well, and if the roof is between 25 and 50 years old and has never been replaced, chances are it is time. Algae is also one of the worst things you can deal with on a roof, and if it has the time to spread, you may have to replace the roof entirely.

These are all things you will need to take a look at when deciding on which option is best for you. Make sure that you assess the condition and speak with an expert that will help you make the right choice.
